Assigned to Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Training Squadron 30 (VP-30), based at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla. as an aircrewman responsible for training replacement aircrew for antisubmarine warfare aircraft duties.
Assigned to Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Squadron Eighteen (VP-18) also based at NAS Jacksonville, Fla. Involved with the Cuban Missile Crisis of November 1962. During the crisis period, our squadron flew patrols to monitor and photograph the missile removal and ship boarding during the crisis period. While assigned to VP-18, I participated in numerous deployments to Europe, South American and the Caribbean in support of the sixth fleet.
In 1968, transferred to the Naval Air Station, Millington, TN, for a 5-year tour of duty as a Navy Instructor in the Naval Aviation Maintenance and Material Management School. I was involved in the training of Aviation Maintenance Officer and Senior Enlisted Personnel in the Navy’s Aviation Maintenance and Materials Management System.
In 1973, I was transferred to the U.S.S. Independence (CV-62), as the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Leading Chief Petty Officer. Responsibilities included the training and assignment of over 300 enlisted personnel, aircraft equipment repair and maintenance, and data analysis for parts reliability studies of aircraft parts and equipment. During this period, the U.S.S. Independence (CV-62) was deployed Europe, the Caribbean, and the North Atlantic regions in support of the Sixth Fleet.
In 1976, I was assigned to the Navy’s Recruiting Command Detroit. Recruiting assignments included Ann Arbor, Taylor-Southgate and Plymouth, Mi. My last recruiting assignment was in the Plymouth Recruiting Station on Penniman Ave.
In August 1981, I retired from the U.S. Navy, with 22 ½ years of service.
